CASE STUDY: OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES LIBRARY
As part of our involvement with the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, RECON collaborated with the Owner’s Architect to conduct a thorough building envelope condition assessment. This evaluation focused on the roof, walls, and windows, providing the Architect with a clear understanding of existing conditions and the scope of repair and restoration work needed. The exterior wall work was identified for inclusion in the Architect’s renovation project that included a new addition, restoration of the building interior, as well as restoration of the building envelope. Our findings and recommendations not only addressed immediate concerns but also helped preserve the library’s historical and educational significance for future generations.
Following the assessment, RECON worked closely with the Construction Manager to develop budgets that accurately reflected the necessary building envelope repairs and restorations. We outlined a cost-effective plan that helped ensure the library’s exterior components were both structurally sound and visually consistent with the institution’s architectural heritage. This involved working with the construction manager to create a detailed approach to the proposed interventions, including materials selection, scheduling, and implementation strategies.
During the design and construction phases, RECON continued to provide valuable input by reviewing the Architect’s drawings and specifications to ensure alignment with best practices for envelope integrity. During construction on-site services included testing as well as construction observations, culminating in comprehensive Field Reports that documented progress, identified any issues, and offered corrective action recommendations. Through this collaboration we helped safeguard the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library’s enduring legacy and functionality.something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.
