REPRESENTATIVE PROJECT:
WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON HOUSE
RECON was involved with the efforts at the historic William Lloyd Garrison House in Roxbury, Massachusetts. RECON conducted a comprehensive building envelope condition assessment as part of an effort to secure funding for performance of a restoration project. Collaborating with the Building Owner and Owner’s Architect, RECON surveyed the building’s exterior walls and roof, identifying areas in need of repair or restoration and helping to develop a plan to address those concerns. Given this property’s critical role in the abolitionist movement, our assessment was designed to meet relevant standards of preservation and ensure the site’s important legacy is honored. We have a special place in our hearts for beautiful historic buildings, and this job was a treat for everyone involved. We were honored to be able to restore the beauty and charm of this piece of Boston’s history!
In addition to our on-site evaluations, RECON prepared a detailed report outlining the nature of the existing conditions and the recommended approaches for repair and restoration. These reports included itemized budgets that helped the Owner understand the necessary investments for maintaining the property’s structural and historical integrity, in turn providing basis for application for a historic restoration grant. By presenting clear findings and well-researched solutions, our team provided the Owner with actionable insights into the building envelope’s short- and long-term needs, enabling informed decision-making and strategic planning.
Crucially, the Owner utilized our thorough assessment and budgeting documents to apply for an historic grant. This funding was instrumental in ensuring that the William Lloyd Garrison House would be restored in a manner befitting its historical and cultural value. Through close collaboration with the construction supervisor, RECON’s meticulous evaluation and guidance supported both the preservation of a significant piece of abolitionist history and the continued stewardship of this iconic Roxbury landmark.
